Let’s face it. This year was a disaster.

Deadly disease. Mass government & economic uncertainty. Wild fires & orange skies. Police brutality & abuse.

I think we’re all pretty happy to be done with 2020.

But it’s not all bad.

Before we put this year behind us, let’s take a moment to reflect on the good things that happened:

  1. In April, Raghu & Chand celebrated their 30 year anniversary. Despite the quarantine, Raghu managed not to get himself kicked out of the house.

  2. December 21st also marked the 30 year anniversary of the approval the Enhanced Potency Polio Vaccine that would go on to all but eradicate the disease. Thirty years later, almost to the day, the COVID-19 vaccine was approved.

  3. In a normal year, Raghu flies approximately two hundred and fifty thousand miles. Due to strict travel restrictions & health concerns, this year he flew less than 20.

  4. Carbon emissions fell by 7% this year — the biggest on record drop in years. Years from now, scientists will discover that Raghu’s reduced travel schedule alone was responsible for the cleaner 2020 air.

  5. Most offices & schools were closed for large parts of the year. Because of this, Vinay was able to spend weeks at a time at home in the Bay Area. His demanding work schedule usually only leaves him with a couple weekend visits per year.

  6. Because of the same office & school closures, March 2020 became the first month in two decades to be completely free of any school gun violence.

  7. Because of limited access to public transit, Varun bought & financed his first car.

  8. The disruption in the global supply chain meant that people bought more used cars than normal, and that fewer new cars were built. This also played a role in carbon reductions — 28% of emissions produced by a car during its lifetime occur during the manufacturing process.

wishing you all a happy holiday & a new year of healing and recovery.
